Kihon

Meaning

The word ‘Kihon’ means the ‘basics‘ It refers to the foundational techniques of Martial Arts. The very foundation of karate.

“Kihon” refers to the constant return by students (and instructors) to the basic techniques found in karate (over and over again!)

 

Practice – Practice – Practice!

It is important to practice kihon to train your body to use the correct techniques of kicking, punching, breathing, blocking, stances, correct form, balance, etc.

 

Standardization

Kihon helps to standardize the most effective techniques to all students (and instructors). It will challenge you!

 
Train Your Mind

“State of Mind” When you practice the ‘basics’ you are also working on improving your mind while you are training! You are learning to control your attitude, learning to focus, and to become patient. You are working on techniques and constantly seeking to improve them and yourself!

 

Begin Class with ‘Kihon’

It’s typical to spend a portion of each karate class devoted to ‘kihon.’ There are always new techniques to learn, but a constant return to the foundational techniques is important to achieve overall balance and skill in Martial Arts!
